Time for a New Year Detox?
It's that time of year again when we have the urge to purge our wardrobe. And doesn't it feel better every time you open the door to neat and orderly rows? I always encourage my clients to let their wardrobes breathe. A cluttered space can actually mean less outfit choices, as you can't see the wood for the trees. Whereas an organised space will allow you to see exactly what you have and inspire different outfit combinations.
But I get it, it's time consuming and exhausting to tackle your wardrobes and drawers in one go, so why not break it down into bite size chunks:
Before you start I suggest that you reverse your coat hangers so that the open end faces you. That's it for Day 1
Over the course of the next few days, pull out a dozen items and decide whether you want to keep each one. They will only earn a place back in your wardrobe if they are the right colour, the right shape, in good condition and you enjoy wearing them. Place these back in your wardrobe with the coat hangers facing the right way around so that you know where you're up to. This should take you no more than five minutes each day, so you can easily fit it in to your busy schedule - as you get dressed or maybe putting clean laundry away. Whatever works for you!
A good practice is to place a black bag in the bottom of your wardrobe for any items that you're not 100% sure about, but not quite ready to let go. If you haven't missed them for six months, now is the time to send to the charity shop/sell on EBay.
When you have gone through your whole wardrobe, you should then be able to see what you're left with. Organize these into dresses, trousers, skirts, tops, jackets and coats. It shouldn't take you very long as you've already done the hard work.
Do the same with your drawers; tackle one drawer a day. You may even find yourself doing more as you see how clean and tidy everything is looking. It's very motivating!
Don't forget your make-up storage too. Most cosmetics have an indication of how long you can keep them for after opening, rule of thumb is liquids don't last as long as powders, and don't risk using anything old on your eyes.
Make a note of any gaps in your wardrobe and cosmetics. It's a good idea to keep this on your phone so that you can refer to it when you're out shopping. It will prevent you from making rash purchases.
