As we step into a new season, one color has emerged as the standout trend across fashion, interiors, and design: burgundy. Rich, deep, and inherently elegant, burgundy brings a timeless sophistication wherever it’s used, making it the perfect hue to embrace during the colder months. From cozy sweaters to bold home accents, here’s why burgundy is the colour to watch this season.
1. What Makes Burgundy Special?
Burgundy is a rich, dark red with purple undertones. It derives its name from Burgundy wine, which originates from the Burgundy region of France. Its blend of red's warmth and purple’s depth creates a luxurious, moody tone that evokes both passion and sophistication. Unlike brighter reds that can feel bold and aggressive, burgundy is more subtle and complex, adding an air of mystery and richness.
2. Burgundy in Fashion
This season, burgundy is taking center stage in fashion collections around the world. It’s a versatile color that works for both day and evening wear, and its depth makes it universally flattering. Here’s how you can incorporate it into your wardrobe:
Outerwear: A burgundy coat or jacket is the perfect way to introduce a pop of color into your fall and winter outfits. Paired with neutral tones like black, beige, or gray, it instantly elevates your look.
Knitwear: Cozy burgundy sweaters or scarves can make a statement while keeping you warm. The richness of the color pairs beautifully with the textures of wool and cashmere.
Accessories: If you’re not ready to commit to full burgundy outfits, opt for accessories like handbags, boots, or even nail polish. A burgundy leather bag, for example, adds an element of luxury without overpowering your outfit.
3. How to Style Burgundy
Because burgundy is such a bold color, it can be intimidating to style. Here are a few tips on how to pair it with other colors to create a harmonious look:
Neutrals: Burgundy works beautifully with neutral shades like beige, cream, black, and gray. These tones balance the richness of the color, letting it shine without feeling overpowering and work well if you have a cool undertone.
Earthy Tones: Pairing burgundy with earthy colors like mustard yellow, olive green, or terracotta if you have warmth in your colouring creates a cozy, autumnal palette.
Metallics: For a more glamorous look, combine burgundy with metallic accents. Gold, brass, and rose gold bring out the luxe undertones of the color, creating a sophisticated and festive feel, perfect for the festive season.
4. Why Burgundy is the Perfect Autumn/Winter Colour
There’s something about burgundy that feels inherently autumnal. It mirrors the changing leaves, the richness of the harvest, and the warmth we crave as the temperatures drop. But beyond its seasonal appeal, burgundy is also timeless and versatile, making it a colour you can continue to wear year-round.
In fashion, it’s a go-to for creating chic, layered outfits. In interiors, it brings a cozy elegance to any space. Whether you’re updating your wardrobe or giving your home a seasonal refresh, burgundy is a color worth embracing this season—and beyond.
5. How to Wear Burgundy for each colouring type:
LIGHT & DEEP
As a Light, you should aim to keep any deep colours including burgundy away from your face. You may choose to wear it in accessories, or in a print that is dominated by one of your lighter shades. If you are investing in accessories, ask yourself, will they work with lots of items that you already own. Don’t buy into a trend for the sake of it!
On the other hand, Deeps will find burgundy very flattering and you may already have something suitable in your wardrobe. Think how you could update it for a current look (eg. a leopard print scarf which again, you may already own). Treat burgundy as a neutral and wear with any of your deep colours such as chocolate. Or, for a playful twist, try it with teal or bittersweet. You can even ‘rescue’ some of your lighter colours such as stone and taupe.
WARM & COOL
Warms can wear the traditional burgundy and tap into their oranges, greens and even earthy browns, pairing with an animal print is also super fun and on trend.
Cools on the other hand would be better moving towards a dark cassis because even though you may choose to wear it on the lower part of your body, it will work with lots more in your wardrobe such as pinks, blues and teals.
CLEAR & SOFT
Your look is very strong if you are a Clear, so this should be reflected in the clothes that you wear. Strictly speaking, you don’t get any of the burgundy family in your palette, as it tends to be a sludgy shade. However, choose a vibrant fabric (here we have patent faux-leather) and it takes on a whole new meaning. Wear with a vibrant shade such as scarlet. We’ve added gold accessories but if you have a cool undertone, you can swap these out for silver.
Softs on the other hand are much more understated. Vibrant shades will overwhelm you. Muted burgundy, claret and even damson are great staples in your wardrobe - treat them as neutrals. You can mix them with some of your other neutrals such as cocoa as we have here, or play around with soft shades of jade or blush pink.
Conclusion
Burgundy is more than just a colour trend; it’s a timeless shade that adds depth and sophistication to everything it touches. This season, let burgundy inspire your fashion choices, bringing a rich, luxurious feel to your personal style.
